Mouthguards

Mouthguards for Patients in the West Midlands

Mouthguards are moulded rubber devices that sit on top of the teeth while you sleep to protect them against damage from harmful habits such as grinding and clenching. They are also commonly used in sports, such as rugby, football and cricket, to protect the teeth and gums from possible injury.

At our dental practice in the West Midlands, we offer the mouthguards our patients need. We provide fitting appointments for both night guards and sports guards, where we’ll precisely measure your teeth and create a guard that is custom-made to fit the exact contours of your teeth and gums. This ensures optimal protection and comfort during use.

Our friendly team of professionals has years of experience of creating mouthguards in the West Midlands, which help patients keep their teeth and gums healthy and protected, even during periods of intense strain.

Steps to Having a Custom-Made Guard

  • At your first appointment, the dentist will assess what type of guard is required, whether it be a night guard for grinding or a mouthguard for sports. Impressions of your teeth will be taken and sent to the lab for the guard’s creation.
  • Your second appointment, a week later, is for fitting. The dentist will check that the mouthguard fits properly and that you are happy with it.

Night Guards for Bruxism

The grinding and clenching of teeth — or bruxism — is a subtle, but potentially harmful, problem that often goes undetected for years. Patients are generally unaware that they grind their teeth in their sleep, but often wake with mouth sores, a tight jaw, or a constant, dull headache. Grinding and clenching during the night can cause excessive wear on the teeth, leading to tooth damage and, sometimes, other oral complications.

Wearing a mouthguard protects the surface of the teeth from damage due to grinding and can reduce the impact of clenching on the gums. Inserting a mouthguard at night can help patients learn not to grind their teeth, resulting in fewer headaches and mouth sores. The price of a night guard is approximately £169.

Sports Guards for Protection

Sports guards are recommended for anyone who regularly takes part in activities such as rugby, football, cricket, or any other sport that could cause injury to the mouth, which may result in needing emergency dental care. Sports guards are typically made to cover the upper teeth, offering protection against teeth breakages and other damage to the inside of your mouth.

If you have braces or bridges on your lower teeth, you may need a mouthguard that provides additional protection. Prices for sports guards is £169/guard.

Customise Your Mouthguard

Both our night and sports guards are available in a range of colours and designs to suit all personal tastes — you could choose the colour of your favourite sports team or, for something different, opt for a glittered colour.

We offer mouthguards in almost 30 different colours, in a range of patterns and with a variety of graphics — including stripes, text, and popular cartoon characters — meaning you can choose a mouthguard that showcases your personality and that you’ll enjoy wearing.

Getting Started with Your Mouthguard

Whatever your mouthguard needs, the first step is to get in touch with us to book a consultation and fitting appointment. We pride ourselves on the service that we offer our patients, aiming to deliver a service we’d want to receive ourselves. We understand that everyone’s needs are unique, so we’ll discuss what you want and talk you through the options available.

Every mouthguard we produce is custom-made to fit a patient’s teeth. At your appointment, we’ll take impressions of your teeth using a putty that is quickly and easily inserted into the mouth. We will then send your teeth moulds to a lab to be manufactured and let you know when your new mouthguard is ready.

Receiving Your Guard

Your guard will be available to collect approximately two weeks after your initial appointment. Once you have your guard, we will give you instructions on how to use it.

Night guards should be worn every night until the symptoms of grinding and clenching subside, but can also be used regularly to prevent any future problems with grinding. Sports guards should be used throughout the duration of play for high-risk sports.

To prevent the spread of infections and gum disease, you should always keep your mouthguard clean. After each use, wash your guard with lukewarm water, and make sure to dry it thoroughly afterwards. Store your guard in its container in a cool, dry place.

Special Designs

Impress your teammates and opponents with one of our special designs. Colours can be substituted for an alternative colour within our standard range.

If you really want to stand out from the crowd, why not customise your guard with one of our decals, your club emblem, or even your own design? The decals can be applied to any of our clear, coloured, striped, or special mouthguards.

Once you have chosen your design from the extensive range, make an appointment with Dr Dhody to discuss your requirements further. Dr Dhody will take an impression of your mouth and recommend the type and thickness of mouthguard for the sports or activity you participate in. Your mouthguard will then be made by a qualified dental technician using the latest technology to ensure a perfect fit.

Please note that no mouthguard can offer complete protection against injury, but a custom-made mouthguard can significantly reduce the risk or extent of damage.
