3D dental scan (CBCT) in Birmingham — clear 3D detail when a standard X-ray isn’t enough

A CBCT scan is a 3D X-ray (dental CT scan) that helps dentists assess bone, roots, sinuses and nerves — commonly before implants, sinus lifts, lower wisdom teeth, and complex root canal decisions.

If your dentist needs a CBCT, they can refer you through our sister site. If you don’t have a referring dentist, you can book an in-house dentist referral appointment first.

For panoramic imaging instead, see OPG scans. If you’re in pain now, go straight to urgent & emergency care.

Why a 3D dental scan (CBCT) is sometimes needed

CBCT shows 3D detail of bone, roots, sinuses and nerves — helping dentists plan safely and avoid surprises.

Implants and sinus lift planning

Often requested before dental implants, especially if sinus lift planning is needed in the upper back teeth.

Lower wisdom teeth & nerve assessment

Used when a 2D X-ray isn’t enough and we need to assess proximity to the lower jaw nerve (ID/IAN) before wisdom tooth removal.

Complex root canal decisions

Sometimes supports difficult root canal cases when symptoms persist or anatomy is unclear.

Trauma & hidden damage

After an accident, CBCT can help assess issues alongside dental trauma care.

“It was quick and straightforward — and my dentist had what they needed to plan properly.”

Latest CBCT technology (Vatech Green X)

Modern 3D imaging with selectable scan sizes — designed to capture what’s needed while minimising exposure outside the area of interest.

Multi-FOV selection

We can choose smaller or larger scan areas depending on what’s needed (for example: single tooth, nerve assessment, or sinus lift planning).

Fast scan time

Shorter scan times can reduce motion blur and improve image clarity — especially helpful if you’re anxious or struggle to keep still.

High-resolution modes

High-detail options are useful for focused regions (e.g., endodontic decisions and complex anatomy).

If you’d like to read about the system, see: Vatech Green X.

How to book a CBCT scan

Choose the route that matches your situation — scan-only via dentist referral, or an in-house dentist referral appointment first.

1) Scan-only (your dentist already needs CBCT)

If your dentist has requested a CBCT, ask them to refer you directly through our sister site. Your dentist will receive a copy of the scan so they can plan your treatment.

Dentist referral → book via Birmingham CBCT & OPG Hub

2) No dentist to refer you? Book an in-house dentist referral appointment

If you don’t have a dentist who can refer you, one of our in-house dentists can assess what you need and provide the referral — ££52. They’ll confirm whether a CBCT or an OPG is the right scan for your situation.

For safety and to meet UK radiation rules, a dentist must assess and justify X-rays before they’re taken. This appointment gives you a clear route forward — and you can still have your scan files shared with a dentist in the UK or abroad afterwards.

Book the in-house referral appointment

3) Do you want reporting / interpretation?

Some patients only need the scan files sent to their own dentist. Others want a written report to support decision-making (especially for complex cases).

Two options:

  • In-house interpretation for straightforward cases.
  • Detailed written report via dentomaxillofacial radiologists for complex cases.

If you’re unsure which you need, message us — we’ll point you to the right option.

For panoramic scans instead, visit OPG scans. For urgent pain or swelling, see urgent & emergency care.

Common CBCT (3D dental scan) requests

These are the most common reasons people search for a CBCT scan. If you’re exploring treatment, start with the relevant page below.

CBCT for implants and sinus lift planning

Often used for planning dental implants, including cases where sinus lift assessment is needed. If you’re comparing options, see implant cost guidance.

CBCT for lower wisdom teeth (nerve assessment)

Useful when planning wisdom teeth treatment, especially where the lower jaw nerve (ID/IAN) is close. Related: wisdom tooth extractions.

CBCT for root canal decisions

Helpful for complex cases linked to root canals when symptoms don’t match standard X-rays.

CBCT after dental trauma

Accidents can cause hidden issues — see dental trauma. If you’re in pain now, start with urgent & emergency care.

What you receive after a CBCT scan

So your dentist can actually use the scan for planning.

Your scan files (DICOM)

You’ll receive your scan in DICOM format — an open, universally accepted file type that most dentists can open (often with free software).

A simple download link

We’ll provide a link for you and/or your dentist (UK or abroad) to download the scan securely, making sharing easy.

Interpretation (if you want it)

If you want support understanding the scan, we can help in-house for straightforward cases. For complex cases, we can arrange a detailed written report via dentomaxillofacial radiologists.

Common questions about CBCT (3D dental scans)

Quick answers — and if you’re unsure, call or message us.

How quickly can you fit me in?

Often very quickly (sometimes the same day), depending on availability. Scan files are usually provided immediately, often the same day. If you need a specific time, call 01922 624900 and we’ll advise the soonest slot.

Is a CBCT scan the same as an OPG?

No. An OPG is a 2D panoramic image; CBCT is a 3D dental scan used when more detail is needed. For OPG details and booking, see OPG scans.

Can my own dentist receive the scan?

Yes. If your dentist refers you via our sister site, they will receive a copy of the scan so they can plan treatment. We can also provide a download link for sharing.

I don’t have a dentist — can I still get a CBCT?

Yes. You can book an in-house dentist referral appointment (££52). A dentist will assess what you need and confirm which scan is appropriate before any X-ray is taken.

Do you assess nerves (ID/IAN) for lower wisdom teeth?

Yes — where appropriate. CBCT can help assess proximity to the lower jaw nerve when a standard X-ray isn’t enough. If you’re in pain now, use urgent & emergency care.

Is it used for sinus lift planning?

Often, yes. CBCT can assess sinus anatomy and bone volume for implant planning and sinus lift cases.

Do you offer written reports?

Yes. Some cases can be interpreted in-house. For complex cases, we can arrange a detailed written report via dentomaxillofacial radiologists. Message us to discuss what’s best for your situation.

What if I’m in pain right now?

If you have severe toothache, swelling, or trauma, start with urgent & emergency care — we’ll focus on getting you comfortable first.
