There is a lot of noise around teeth whitening. This page sets out, plainly, what actually works, how long it lasts, what it costs and what is safe. No brand claims, no fluff — just what you would want a family member told.
A quick word on safety and the law
In the UK, teeth whitening using stronger bleaching gel is a dental procedure. It must be carried out, or prescribed, by a registered dentist. Salon and beauty-bar whitening above the legal limit is not safe and not legal. Anything you buy off the shelf in a UK shop is required to be low concentration, and is far weaker than what a dentist can offer.
Option 1: In-clinic professional whitening
This is whitening done in the dental chair, often in a single visit. Strong gel is applied to your teeth under careful isolation of your gums, sometimes activated by a light. Treatment usually takes 60 to 90 minutes.
- Results: the biggest shade change in the shortest time
- Longevity: typically 1 to 3 years, longer if topped up at home
- Cost positioning: from around £450 to £950 depending on the system
- Best for: people who want a noticeable change quickly, or for an event
Well-known systems in the UK include Enlighten, Boutique and Philips Zoom. They are all genuine clinical systems. Which is right depends on the starting shade of your teeth and your sensitivity history — your dentist will advise.
Option 2: Dentist-prescribed home whitening kits
Custom trays are made to fit your teeth exactly, and you wear them at home with prescription-strength gel — usually for an hour or two a day, or overnight, for 2 to 3 weeks.
- Results: very good — often as good as in-clinic, just slower
- Longevity: 1 to 3 years; trays can be reused for top-ups
- Cost positioning: from around £350 to £550
- Best for: people who do not mind a slower process and want to top up at home in future
Common systems include Boutique and Opalescence. The trays are the key — a well-fitting tray keeps the gel where it should be.
Option 3: Over-the-counter whitening strips
Strips that you press onto your teeth for around 30 minutes a day, for 1 to 2 weeks. Available in supermarkets and online.
- Results: mild to moderate. Surface stain comes off; deep colour change is limited
- Longevity: a few months
- Cost: £20 to £50 a pack
- Watch out for: uneven results, gum irritation if the strip slips, and sensitivity. Not custom-fit to your teeth.
Some better-known strip brands (such as Crest in the US) sell stronger versions abroad than are legal to sell in the UK. Be cautious of imports.
Option 4: Whitening toothpastes
These remove surface staining (coffee, tea, red wine) through mild abrasives or low-strength polishing agents. They do not change the natural colour of your teeth.
- Results: slight — you will notice less staining, not a whiter shade
- Longevity: for as long as you keep using it
- Cost: £2 to £8
- Best for: maintenance after proper whitening, or for people whose teeth are simply stained, not yellow underneath
So what is “best”?
If you want a real shade change that lasts: in-clinic or dentist-prescribed home kits. If you want to maintain: a good whitening toothpaste and the odd top-up. If you want a quick clean-up before an event and your teeth are fundamentally a good colour: strips may do enough.
Whitening only changes natural tooth enamel — it does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. If you have a front crown, factor that in before booking.

How long do results last?

Why is in-clinic whitening more expensive?
You are paying for clinical time, the higher-strength legally-restricted gel, gum protection and the speed of result. A home kit takes weeks of your time; in-clinic takes 90 minutes of ours.
Will whitening damage my enamel?
Used correctly, no. Some people get short-term sensitivity for a day or two — that is normal and settles.
Can I whiten if I have crowns or veneers on my front teeth?
