Imaging for safer planning

OPG/CBCT when appropriate — especially for impacted lower wisdom teeth.

What happens at a wisdom tooth extraction appointment?

Relief first — then a sensible decision.

  1. Focused exam (gum, bite, nearby tooth, food trapping / inflammation).
  2. X-ray when needed (OPG or CBCT where appropriate for position and safety).
  3. Numbing + comfort (we’ll check you’re properly numb before starting).
  4. Removal if appropriate (simple vs surgical approach explained before we begin).
  5. Aftercare plan (pain relief, cleaning, what to avoid, and what’s normal).

Antibiotics: not every flare-up needs them. If there are signs of a spreading infection, antibiotics may be prescribed only when clinically indicated — and we’ll still explain the treatment that addresses the cause.

Recovery & aftercare (what most people want to know)

  • Swelling: most noticeable for 48–72 hours, then settles.
  • Eating: soft foods for a few days, avoid small grains in the socket early on.
  • Cleaning: gentle brushing; we’ll advise when to start careful rinsing.
  • Work: many people return in 1–2 days (varies by complexity).
  • Dry socket risk: we’ll show you how to reduce it and what symptoms to watch for.

Cost guide for extractions

We confirm fees after assessing the tooth and before starting.

  • Simple extraction: from £90
  • Complex wisdom tooth extraction: typically £163 (most commonly) – £734 (rarer, advanced cases)

For general fees, see the prices page.

FAQs

Do you remove wisdom teeth on the same day?

Where appropriate, yes. If the position/complexity makes same-day removal unwise, we’ll stabilise the problem and plan the safest next step.

Will it hurt?

We make sure you’re properly numb before starting. If you feel anything sharp, raise your hand and we’ll pause and top up immediately.

Do I need antibiotics for a wisdom tooth infection?

Not always. Antibiotics are used when there are signs of spreading infection or you’re systemically unwell. We’ll explain what’s needed and why.

What about impacted lower wisdom teeth?

We assess position and risks first. Imaging (OPG/CBCT) may be advised for safer planning, especially if the tooth is close to nerves.

How long is recovery?

Most swelling peaks at 48–72 hours. Many people are back to normal routines within a couple of days, but surgical cases can take longer.

Do you offer sedation?

We focus on calm, non-sedation techniques. Sedation can be discussed if you specifically request it.

What is dry socket and how would I know?

It’s when the clot doesn’t settle properly and pain increases a few days after extraction. If pain worsens after day 2–3, call us and we’ll advise.

What if I’m not registered?

That’s fine — we welcome new patients and can usually see urgent problems quickly.
