What is AIRFLOW?

AIRFLOW is a modern, minimally invasive way to clean your teeth. Instead of scraping with metal instruments, it gently directs a controlled spray of warm water, compressed air and very fine powder across the tooth surface and just below the gum line. This lifts away soft plaque, surface stains and early bacterial biofilm — the sticky layer that leads to decay and gum disease — leaving teeth visibly cleaner and feeling beautifully smooth. It forms part of an approach called Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a structured, evidence-based way of cleaning that targets exactly where plaque is, so nothing is missed and healthy tissue is left undisturbed.

What AIRFLOW can help with

Stubborn surface stains

Lifts tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco stains that brushing can’t shift.

Plaque & biofilm

Removes the soft bacterial film that drives decay and gum inflammation.

A brighter, smoother smile

Teeth feel polished and look noticeably fresher — often a shade brighter.

Tricky-to-reach areas

Cleans around braces, implants and slightly crowded teeth where brushes struggle.

Comfort for sensitive mouths

No scraping and warm water make it gentler for sensitive teeth and gums.

AIRFLOW vs a traditional scale and polish

A traditional scale and polish uses hand and ultrasonic instruments to scrape tartar away, followed by a polishing paste. It’s excellent for removing hardened tartar. AIRFLOW works differently — it’s powered by water, air and powder rather than scraping, which is why many people find it gentler and less “scratchy”. In practice the two often work together: hardened tartar is removed first, then AIRFLOW is used to clear remaining stains and biofilm and leave a smooth finish.

  • Gentler experience: no metal scraping; warm water reduces sensitivity.
  • Better stain removal: reaches grooves, pits and gaps a polishing cup can miss.
  • Kinder to dental work: safe around implants, crowns, veneers and braces.
  • Smoother result: teeth feel cleaner for longer after the appointment.

AIRFLOW at our Great Barr practice

Based in Great Barr, we’re easy to reach for patients across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. AIRFLOW can be booked on its own or combined with a hygiene appointment — and if you’d also like a dentist check-up, we can plan it all in one visit.

Who is AIRFLOW good for?

  • Anyone with tea, coffee, red wine or smoking stains they want gone
  • People who find a traditional scrape uncomfortable or have sensitive teeth
  • Patients with braces, implants, crowns or veneers needing careful cleaning
  • Anyone wanting a fresh, polished feel before a special occasion or whitening
  • Those who simply want a deeper, more thorough clean than brushing allows

If you want a bigger shade change rather than stain removal, AIRFLOW pairs perfectly with teeth whitening — cleaning the enamel first helps the whitening work more evenly. It’s also a great fix for stained and yellow teeth caused by everyday food and drink.

What happens during an AIRFLOW appointment?

  • Quick assessment: we check your teeth and gums and disclose any plaque so we can see exactly what to target.
  • AIRFLOW cleaning: a gentle spray of warm water, air and fine powder removes stain, plaque and biofilm.
  • Tartar removal if needed: any hardened tartar is removed with ultrasonic instruments.
  • Final check & advice: we make sure everything is clean and give you tailored home-care tips.

How often should I have AIRFLOW?

Most patients have AIRFLOW as part of a hygiene visit every 6 months. If you build up stain quickly — for example if you drink a lot of tea, coffee or red wine, or you smoke — you may prefer it every 3–4 months to keep your smile looking its best.

AIRFLOW FAQs

Does AIRFLOW hurt?

For most people AIRFLOW is comfortable and often more pleasant than a traditional scrape. It uses warm water and a fine powder rather than metal instruments. If your gums are inflamed or your teeth are sensitive, let us know — we can adjust the powder and technique to keep you comfortable.

How is AIRFLOW different from a normal scale and polish?

A scale and polish removes tartar by scraping, then polishes with a paste. AIRFLOW cleans with a jet of water, air and powder, which reaches stains and biofilm in grooves and gaps that polishing can miss. The two are often used together: tartar is removed first, then AIRFLOW finishes the job.

Will AIRFLOW whiten my teeth?

AIRFLOW removes surface stains, so teeth often look brighter and closer to their natural shade afterwards. It does not change the underlying colour of the tooth — for that you’d want professional whitening, which works best on freshly cleaned enamel.

Is AIRFLOW safe around implants, crowns and braces?

Yes. AIRFLOW is gentle and is widely used to clean carefully around implants, crowns, veneers and orthodontic braces, where ordinary brushing struggles to reach.

How long does an AIRFLOW appointment take?

Usually around 30 minutes, depending on how much stain and plaque there is and whether you’re also having tartar removed.

How often should I have it?

Every 6 months suits most patients. If you stain quickly from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking, every 3–4 months keeps things looking fresh.

Do I need to see a dentist first?

No — you can book AIRFLOW directly with our hygiene team. We still recommend routine dental check-ups for full-mouth health.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have AIRFLOW?

AIRFLOW suits most people, but it isn’t recommended in a few situations — for example certain respiratory conditions or specific dietary restrictions related to the powder. We’ll check your medical history first and recommend the best option for you.
