Broken Denture Repair in Birmingham

A broken denture can be worrying, especially if it happens suddenly while eating or cleaning it. In many cases the denture can be repaired, but the exact approach depends on how and why it broke.

When we see a denture that has fractured, the first step is to carefully assess the break and the underlying cause. The solution may be simple, or it may involve improving the denture so the problem does not return.

1. A Clean Break – Simple Repair

Sometimes the denture breaks cleanly into two pieces and the parts still fit together accurately.

In this situation the repair is often straightforward. The denture can usually be re-aligned and bonded back together, restoring its shape and function.

This type of repair is typically the quickest option when the fracture line is clear and the denture still fits properly in the mouth.

2. When the Denture Needs Repositioning

Occasionally the pieces do not align perfectly after the break.

This may happen because the denture has distorted slightly over time, or because the break has altered the way it sits in the mouth.

In these cases we may:

  • Repair the denture first
  • Then arrange a second visit to adjust the fit

These adjustments ensure the denture sits comfortably and functions properly again.

3. Strengthening the Denture

If a denture has fractured once, it can sometimes benefit from reinforcement.

During repair we may add a small metal mesh or reinforcing wire inside the denture base. This helps distribute forces across the denture and can make it more resistant to future fractures.

4. Understanding Why the Denture Broke

A denture rarely breaks without a reason. Part of the process is identifying what caused the fracture.

Common reasons include:

  • The bite placing too much pressure on one area
  • The denture becoming loose or poorly supported over time
  • Natural changes in the shape of the gums and jaw
  • General wear and fatigue of the material

If the underlying cause is not addressed, the denture may simply break again.

5. When a New Denture May Be Better

Sometimes a repair is possible but not ideal.

If the denture is old, very worn, or repeatedly breaking, it may be wiser to consider making a new denture.

Modern dentures can be made using high-impact acrylic, which is a stronger type of denture material designed to resist fractures better than standard acrylic.

6. Considering a Spare Denture

For patients who rely heavily on their denture, having a spare denture can be very useful.

If one denture breaks or needs adjustment, you are not left without teeth while repairs are carried out.

What To Do If Your Denture Breaks

If your denture breaks:

  • Avoid using glue or DIY repair kits
  • Keep all pieces of the denture
  • Arrange an appointment so we can assess it properly

In many situations a denture can be repaired quickly, but the correct treatment depends on how the denture broke and how it fits in your mouth.

Dentist and assistant arrived on time to treat my wife who sadly suffers from dementia and is unable to communicate to dentist fully.
(Sadly not seen Dentist for 5 years)
The service they gave was nothing short of wonderful. As patients partner, I was involved in the process of a 3 tooth removal process. Dentist explained the process, the techniques, apparatus used, how the treatment was administered and all aspects of aftercare.
Both Dentist and assistant talked and encouraged wife in a calm and professional way, held her hand to calm her.
Dentist only proceeded when gum area was completely numb so extractions could proceed.
All 3 extractions proceeded in a calm and professional manner.
I can only say a big thank you to Dentist and assistant who really put myself at ease with the whole process.
Communication from their Birmingham centre was excellent, and, although I was in the Liverpool area for treatment, there were no communication glitches.
I can thoroughly recommend the homevisit way of providing dental services for the more vulnerable and mobility problems of patients.
I thank them very much.
Steve.

I've had several treatments at The Dentist, Implants, Veneers, Emergency Centre, including wisdom tooth extraction, crowns, and fillings, and I couldn't be more pleased with the care I've received. The team is professional, caring, and ensures every visit is as comfortable as possible. The dentist took great care to make sure I felt at ease during each procedure, and the results have always been excellent.
