Since I qualified I have always been weary of dental implants.
Nobody likes their treatments to fail and at a cost of about £2000 per implant the patient won’t be happy too.
We are in an age of so much litigation and regulation that Dental Implants seemed like asking for trouble. When 1 of your 20 implants are statistically speaking going to fail. let’s say that to start with I do an implant a week, then every year it is likely that I will have 2 failed implants. 2 unhappy patients. And I would worry about 2 complaints !
Having now started my dental implants course I realise that when such a risk is inherent in dental implants, the solution is proper and complete communication with the patient.
Where the patient understands and accepts the risks of implants then if it does fail, the understanding and acceptance should be there.
Dental Implants isn’t something to fear when the proper consent and communication processes are followed. Mixed in there is proper case assessment and choice and working within your limits.
