Mouth Cancer
Mouth Cancer, also known as Oral Cancer, develops when a tumour forms on the surface of the tongue, mouth, lips, or gums. It can also occur in other areas such as the salivary glands, tonsils, and part of the throat, although tumours in these areas are less common.
Typical symptoms include:
- Ulcer in the mouth that doesn’t heal
- Pain in the mouth that doesn’t go away
- White or red patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue
- A lump on the lip, tongue, or in the mouth or throat
Risk factors that can increase an individual’s chance of developing mouth cancer include:
- Smoking or using tobacco products
- Consuming alcohol – particularly for those who both smoke and drink
- Infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV)
Early detection is key to successful treatment. Regular dental check-ups—at least yearly, even for those with false teeth—are essential. Many dentists routinely screen for mouth and oropharyngeal cancer and will refer you to a specialist if any concerns arise. You can also self-examine your mouth using a small mirror to check for any unusual changes.
It’s highly important to report any changes in your mouth to your dentist or GP, especially if you are a smoker or heavy drinker.
If you are concerned and aren’t yet registered with a dentist, please call and book an appointment as soon as possible.
