OPG scan in Birmingham (digital panoramic dental X-ray)
Need an OPG X-ray (panoramic dental X-ray) to send to your dentist — in the UK or abroad? We offer scan-only with a dentist’s referral, and we can also arrange an in-house consultation if you don’t have a referring dentist.
Referral / justification is required by law (and for your safety). Dental X-rays must be clinically justified by a dentist. If your dentist has requested an OPG, book scan-only. If you don’t have a dentist (or you’re unsure what you need), book a short consultation so our dentist can assess and justify the X-ray safely.
Digital OPG = minimum dose. This is one of the safest routine dental X-rays because it uses a low radiation dose while still giving a useful full-jaw overview.

Common reasons for an OPG scan
A panoramic X-ray gives a wide overview of your teeth, jaws and supporting bone. It’s often used before:
- Veneers or crowns (including overseas planning)
- Implants and All-on-4 discussions
- Wisdom teeth checks (wisdom teeth info)
- Reviewing gum health signs: bone levels, loose teeth (overview) — see gum disease
- Pre-orthodontics (before braces) — see braces / teeth straightening
If your dentist needs detailed 3D planning, see our 3D scans (CBCT) page.
What you’ll receive
- Clear digital OPG image taken on the day
- An image file that’s easy to print or email to your dentist (UK or abroad)
- If your dentist later needs 3D, see CBCT scans

Why people book an OPG scan
Digital panoramic dental X-rays in Great Barr, Birmingham — helpful when you need a clear overview and a file you can forward on.
To send to a dentist abroad
Often requested for planning veneers, implants or smile makeovers overseas. We take the OPG and provide an easy-to-share image file.
Implant / surgery discussions
Useful for an initial overview before a dentist decides if 3D imaging is needed (see CBCT scans for detailed planning).
Wisdom teeth and jaw checks
A broad overview that can support wisdom tooth assessment. If you’re considering removal, see wisdom tooth extractions.
Assessing current oral health
Sometimes your dentist wants an overview for gum disease signs, bone levels, or loose teeth. Related pages: gum disease and oral hygiene.
Also common: pre-orthodontics — see braces.
Reminder: your OPG must be requested/justified by a dentist (either your own referral or our in-house consultation) for legal compliance and safety.
How to book your OPG scan
Two booking routes — and both meet the legal requirement for justification.
Why this matters: X-rays are only taken when justified. This protects you from unnecessary radiation and ensures your scan is appropriate for your needs.
Costs: OPG scan £74. Consultation (if needed) £52. Full pricing: our prices.
If your dentist specifically needs 3D imaging for implants / sinus lift / detailed nerve assessment, see: 3D scans (CBCT).
Case study: OPG scan before dental treatment abroad
A common scenario: you’re planning treatment overseas and the clinic asks for a recent panoramic dental X-ray (OPG).
We often see patients planning treatment abroad (for example in Turkey, Hungary, Poland or Spain) who need an OPG scan to email over before they travel. We’ve also had patients visit us from other countries, including Romania.
Clinics commonly request an OPG for planning veneers, crowns, implants, and All-on-4. The scan helps with an overview of the current dentition, visible bone levels, jaw anatomy, and broad assessment of key areas.
We took the low dose digital OPG, then shared an image file that the patient could print or email the same day. No “secure download portal” required — it’s deliberately easy to forward to whoever needs it.
And importantly: even if you’re booking “scan-only”, the X-ray still needs justification by a dentist. That’s why we either work from your dentist’s referral, or we arrange a short consultation with our dentist first.
Pricing: OPG scan £74. Consultation (if needed) £52.
If your dentist needs 3D (CBCT)
An OPG is an overview. For detailed 3D planning (implants, sinus lift planning, or detailed nerve assessment), your dentist may request a CBCT scan. See our internal page: 3D scans (CBCT).

- For detailed planning, see CBCT scans

Common questions about OPG scans
Quick answers — and if you’re unsure, call or message us.
Do I need a referral for an OPG scan?
Yes — an X-ray must be justified by a dentist. If your own dentist has requested an OPG, that acts as the referral for scan-only. If you don’t have a dentist, you can book a short consultation so our dentist can assess and justify the X-ray for legal compliance and your safety. You can also see our practice referrals page.
How much does an OPG scan cost?
Our OPG scan price is £74. If you need an in-house dentist to justify the scan first, consultation is £52. Full pricing: prices.
Is a digital OPG low radiation?
Yes. A digital OPG is low dose (minimum radiation), making it one of the safest routine dental X-rays, while still giving a helpful full-jaw overview.
Can I book scan-only to send to my dentist abroad?
Yes — scan-only is suitable when you already have a referral/justification from your dentist. Many patients book an OPG X-ray to email to a clinic abroad (for veneers, crowns, implants or All-on-4). Book here: book online.
How do I receive the scan?
We provide an OPG image file that’s easy to print or email. We can send it to you and/or directly to your dentist so it can be forwarded quickly (UK or abroad).
What if my dentist needs a 3D scan (CBCT)?
