What is Botox?

Botox is a drug made from a neurotoxin. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically remove wrinkles by temporarily paralysing the muscles.

How’s Botox given & What are the effects?

Botox is given in the form of an injection and should only be given to you by a trained medical professional, even when used for cosmetic purposes. The injection is injected into the muscle depending on the area you’re getting done. It works by weakening the muscles that cause wrinkles. After the injection, the muscle will gradually relax, and the lines will disappear substantially or completely. The injection may be given into more than one area at a time, depending on the condition/area being treated.

The effects of Botox injections are temporary and your normal features before having the treatment may begin to return within 3 months after the injection. After repeated injections, it will take less and less time for your normal skin before the treatment, to return.

Common side effects, dependent upon the area injected:

  • Muscle weakness where the medicine was injected
  • Bruising, bleeding, pain, redness, or swelling where injection was applied
  • Headache, tiredness, muscle stiffness, neck or back pain, pain in the arms or legs
  • Dry mouth, blurred vision
  • Increased sweating in areas other than underarms
  • Cold/flu symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, coughing, sore throat

What are Dermal fillers?

Dermal Fillers are a collagen material made of synthetic or natural substances. They are popular treatments for wrinkles and facial lines. The procedure helps to fill out and smoothen such areas that may be troublesome like; nose to mouth grooves or forehead lines.

How are Dermal Fillers given & What are the effects?

Dermal fillers are again given in the form of an injection. They are mainly used in order to fill out wrinkles or creases in the skin, they can also be used to increase the volume and definition of lips. Dermal fillers can be made from a variety of materials and the effects can be either temporary or permanent, depending on the type of filler used.

During the procedure, the filler is injected in a series of small injections and then the area is gently massaged. Some treatments may require a local anaesthetic cream or injection. Treatment time can vary, it can be between 30 minutes to an hour long.

Common side effects, dependent upon the area injected:

  • Rash may form
  • Swelling, itching and bruising
  • Redness
  • General pain
